Micro and Nanofabrication Unit - MNTEC

The new Micro and Nanofabrication Unit it is intended for the production of materials and devices using micro and nanofabrication technologies, and it was built in the scope of the project “Strengthening and Requalification of the Infrastructure for Micro/Nanofabrication of the University of Porto”, of the Rectorate of the University of Porto,  selected for financial support by the program QREN-Norte (ON.2) - Refª NORTE-07-0162-FEDER-000037.

The mission the Micro and Nanofabrication Unit is the support of research, the support of graduate and pos-graduate training and courses and to provide technological services to companies.

The Project is anchored on the CEMUP acquired competence, along 30 year of activity,  in the frame of the support and service for advanced materials characterization, and on the knowledge and experience in micro/nanofabrication acquired since the late eighties at the Department de Physics and Astronomy of the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (DFA-FCUP), at the Institute for System and Computer Engineering of Porto (INESC Porto) and at the Material Physics Institute of the University of Porto (IFIMUP-UP).

The project includes the participation of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and received a broad consensus among the other Organic Units of the University as well as from other R&D groups with interest in Micro/Nanosciences. In a broader range, this project has received the support from several companies from the North Region, and in special from the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL).

This Unit enables the research units of the University of Porto, the companies and other organizations from the Scientific and Technological National System the access to new facilities of fabrication and characterization for the prototyping of micro/nano devices, for the development of new material micro/nano structured, among other activities with interest for a diversified group economic sectors.  This infrastructure also will be important for the support to candidate european projects in the frame of the European Research Area for Nanotechnologies and a factor of competitiveness and internationalization of the regional and national economy.

This initiative of the University of Porto will strength the capacity for the intervention in the strategic fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in the components of teaching and advanced training, research and economic knowledge valorization, and it expresses the unequivocal vocation and the proactive intervention of the University of Porto as a innovation an development motor in the North Region and in the Country.
