Description
TThe UltrafleXtreme (Bruker) is a MALDI-TOF/TOF spectrometer. Performing matrix assisted desorption (MALDI) ionization with the acquisition velocity and unlimited mass range (up to 500 kDa) of the time of flight (TOF) mass analyzer. The spectrometer can operate in reflector or linear modes. The reflector mode (up to -30 kDa) allows high resolution with isotopic separation, while the linear mode allows the determination of high molecular weight species. MALDI-TOF is particularly well suited for analysing polymeric materials and large biomolecules (intact proteins). MALDI-TOF-MS has also been used for microorganism identification through intact cell mass fingerprint.
The TOF/TOF platform offers the possibility of structural characterization through MS/MS experiments. Furthermore, MALDI is ideal for analysing small/limited samples, with fentomol sensitivity and the requirement of <2 µl samples. MALDI can also be adapted to analyse samples of poor solubility in ESI compatible solvents.
